At 2115 meters above sea level, the Col du Tourmalet is the highest paved road pass in the French Pyrenees. It was the first high mountain pass to be included in the Tour de France program in 1910. It is also the most frequently used high mountain pass in the 106 editions of the Tour.
In 1913, Eugène Christophe had to repair his broken bicycle fork himself in a forge in Sainte-Marie-de-Campan. Pierre Latour won the last mountain prize here in 2021, and Thibaut Pinot won the last prize from the west side in 2019.
The climb from the west side starts in Luz-Saint-Sauveur, passes through Barèges and overcomes an altitude difference of nearly 1400 m over 18.4 km with an average gradient of 7.2%. The descent then goes via La Mongie to Sainte-Marie-de-Campan.
